Chinese vs European production lines: a cost and support comparison.

TL;DR: For the same output class, a Chinese-built line costs a fraction of the European equivalent in capital, and its spare parts are cheaper by an order of magnitude. European vendors answer with polish, deep documentation and premium support — priced accordingly, and mostly aimed at projects far bigger than the US$150k–900k class most African manufacturers are actually buying. The real decision isn't the flag on the machine. It's the delivery model: who specifies, commissions, trains and supplies parts — because a Chinese line properly delivered outperforms both a Chinese line bought bare and a European line you couldn't afford enough of.

First, respect where it's due — in both directions

European process equipment is excellent, and everyone knows it. What fewer buyers say out loud: Chinese production machinery is also excellent for the vast majority of small and mid-sized applications — it fills, seals, presses, moulds, mills and packs the world's goods, including a large share of what runs inside European-branded plants. What the capital difference really buys you

The point of the price gap is not saving money for its own sake. It's what the saved capital does: for the price of one European line, a manufacturer in our markets can typically put a complete Chinese-sourced line on the floor, fully deliver it — civils, utilities, commissioning, training, first spares (the other 45–65% of any project) — and still hold working capital for raw materials and the ramp-up months. A beautiful machine with no working capital behind it is a monument, not a business.

Where the European premium genuinely earns its keep: very high-speed lines, special hygienic or regulatory niches, and plants where an OEM service contract with guaranteed response is worth its considerable price. Those are real cases. They are mostly not US$150k–900k cases.

The honest weaknesses of buying Chinese — and what fixes them

The gap in a direct-from-China purchase is everything around the machine: specification you must get right alone, documentation of uneven depth, commissioning support measured in visa days, and after-sales that too often means a WeChat reply. None of these are flaws in the steel — they are flaws in the delivery model of buying factory-direct across an ocean, and they are fixable: specification carried by an engineering partner, commissioning to a written output, operators trained, documentation delivered, and parts on a channel that already runs. Chinese equipment, properly delivered and properly supported.

The failure mode to avoid: comparing a European quote (which includes delivery, commissioning and training) against a bare Chinese FOB price — concluding the gap is 4×, then buying the bare machine and discovering the missing scope one crisis at a time. Compare whole delivered projects, or compare nothing.

How to decide in practice

  • Buying in the US$150k–900k class? A properly delivered Chinese line is almost always the rational choice — the European equivalent either doesn't exist at that size or costs multiples.
  • Comparing quotes? Force both to the same scope: landed, installed, commissioned to output, team trained, first spares included. Then look at the number.
  • Worried about the decade after handover? The right question for any vendor, of any nationality: "When it breaks in year three, what exactly happens — and what does the part cost me?" Judge the answers, not the accents.
